Intense Pulsed Light Therapy

What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy?

Intense pulsed light therapy for dry eye problems is a non-invasive treatment that uses photo-rejuvenation to relieve symptoms caused by dry eyes. It works by heating up the skin around the eyes and unblocking the meibomian glands. This then allows oil to be secreted into the eyes which forms a protective film over the inner tear layer and prevents the tears from evaporating.

People with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and similar conditions have blocked glands. As a result, they experience dry eyes. IPL treatment for dry eyes targets the area and opens up the channels which allow the oil or lipids to flow, relieving the symptoms and treating the underlying problem.

What Symptoms does IPL Therapy Treat?

The symptoms that intense pulsed light dry eye therapy treats include:

  • Soreness
  • Itching
  • Burning sensation
  • Redness
  • Watering eyes
  • Gritty sensation
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Blurred vision
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Sticky or crusty eyelids

IPL for dry eyes can help to alleviate these symptoms. Most people will need up to four treatments, typically spaced a few weeks apart but some may see improvements after the first session.

How is Intense Pulsed Light Therapy Different from Our Other Dry Eye Treatments?

IPL treatment for dry eyes is different from other dry eye therapies because it directly targets the problem of blocked meibomian glands. Unlike eye drops or eye supplements which relieve the symptoms, IPL gets to the root of the problem. Stabilizing the tear film by allowing lipids to flow into the eyes provides long term relief  from dry eyes rather than the temporary remedy provided by other therapies.

In addition, with IPL dry eye treatment few side effects are experienced by patients. Although the sensation is described as a slight snapping of a rubber band on the skin, it is tolerated well by most patients.
